What are EMR and ESD?
Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) and Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) are advanced endoscopic procedures used to remove early-stage gastrointestinal cancers or large precancerous lesions from the esophagus, stomach, or colon. These techniques allow gastroenterologists to remove tumors or abnormal tissue without the need for invasive surgery.
EMR involves the removal of superficial lesions from the mucosal layer of the gastrointestinal tract, while ESD is used for larger, deeper tumors or lesions that extend into the submucosal layer. Both procedures preserve the integrity of the surrounding tissue, reducing the need for traditional surgery and improving recovery times.
Minimally invasive: These procedures are performed through an endoscope, meaning there are no large incisions, reducing recovery time and discomfort.
Effective for early cancer: EMR and ESD are highly effective in removing early-stage cancers and precancerous polyps, preventing the development of more advanced cancers.
Preserves tissue: Both procedures focus on removing only the affected tissue, preserving surrounding healthy tissue, and ensuring faster healing.
Initial Consultation: If you have been diagnosed with a precancerous lesion or early-stage cancer, your gastroenterologist will evaluate your condition and discuss the best treatment options, which may include EMR or ESD.
Endoscopic Procedure: Using a flexible endoscope, the gastroenterologist will access the lesion and carefully remove the abnormal tissue. For EMR, the lesion is removed using a suction technique or electrosurgical snare. For ESD, a scalpel-like instrument is used to dissect larger, deeper lesions.
Post-Procedure Care: After the procedure, patients may experience minor discomfort, but recovery time is minimal. Regular follow-up visits are scheduled to monitor for any recurrence or complications.
